Has Black Mirror lost its shine?

Black Mirror began as a strange (very strange, recall the pig) dystopian anthology series in the twilight hours of Channel 4’s programming schedule in late 2011. From these humble beginnings, Black Mirror became a cult favourite, and then a global hit with its move to Netflix. It has also become a phrase ingrained in our vocabulary- used as a kind of collective relief in a shared frustration and recognition at the cruel and ridiculous- seen plastered on signs at various marches and protests in recent years. However, every star begins to dim and the recent output from Black Mirror has received more mixed reviews. The height of adulation came with Season 3’s San Junipero . Moonlight Review

I am sat on holiday looking at the sea, a thing that is so entwined in the poetry of Moonlight, and I thought that with its DVD release it was about time to talk about this year's Best Picture winner- in a review that's been more delayed than the Queen's Speech. ( I have to pause here as I have been overcome with a sense of dread at the political goings on in the UK. I share a DUP meme, like a concerned tweet about the single market, go to get a strawberry daquiri, and feel instantly better). So let's not ramble a sentence longer and let's bask in Moonlight. The film tells the story of Chiron in tryptic. Each chapter is titled after the name Chiron is identified by at that point and we see him grow from a child to a man. Chiron's life is marked by the struggles he faces due to his socioeconomic status, his race, and his sexuality. The story is composed masterfully, an understated symphony. Masterclass with Charlie Brooker

To round off BFI's first ever TV festival BFI IMAX hosted a masterclass with the dark lord of satire himself Charlie Brooker, hosted by James O'Brien. Charlie Brooker is worshipped widely today with such reverence that you might well believe he was a wizard with the power to grant eternal youth. Alas, this is not the case. However what Brooker does have is the power to turn any program into TV gold- albeit gold that makes you feel slightly sad about the world we live in. I have been a Brooker mega fan ever since I was introduced to one of his Guardian articles in a Year 10 English lesson so it was something of an existential moment to hear him in person.
